Relay Earns All-America Honors at First Day of NCAA Championships

(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) - Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving has five participants at 2014 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships taking place March 19-22. The 200-yard medley relay started the meet with an Honorable Mention All-America performance taking 15th place.

Tartan individuals also competed in the 500-yard freestyle and 50-yard freestyle on Wednesday afternoon.

Sophomores Kira Singhaus (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) and Felicia Wang (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley), with freshman Gillian Crews (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) and senior Soleil Phan (Irvine, Calif./Beckman) took to the pool for the 200-yard medley relay.  The group completed the preliminaries with a new school record time of 1:45.50 placing 14th to advance to the finals.

In the finals, the 200-yard medley relay team finished 15th in a time of 1:45:68 to become just the second relay in school history to earn All-America honors.

Phan and senior Megan Garvey (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy), both on their second trip to the NCAA Championships meet, competed in the 500-yard freestyle.  Phan finished the race with a time of 5:02.76 and Garvey tapped the wall stopping the clock at 5:06.36 for the Tartans.

Freshman Gillian Crews (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) raced in the prelims of the 50-yard freestyle, completing the race with a time of 24.84 seconds.

Competition will continue Thursday, March 20.
