Tartans Women Dominate in Wins Over Westminster and SUNY Geneseo

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team dominated in the pool Saturday, January 17 in a home double-dual meet with Westminster College and SUNY Geneseo. The Tartans defeated the Titans 240-60 and the Knights 161-139 by winning eight events and placing second in nine.

Just like in previous meets, the Tartans opened with a 200-yard medley relay victory, as the team of freshman Anna Wong (Solon, Ohio/Solon), junior Felicia Wang (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley), sophomore Gillian Crews (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) and freshman Tiana Marrese (Pittsburgh, Pa./South Fayette) touched first in 1:49.17.

Freshman Miranda Ford (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) placed second in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:02.66, freshman Emma Shi (Penfield, N.Y.) was second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:57.60, sophomore Allison Kirkby (West Chester, Pa./Conestoga) was second in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.38, Marrese was second in the 100-yard freestyle in 54.68, while sophomore Kimberly Klausing (North Potomac, Md./Thomas Wootton) touched second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:20.84.

In the backstroke, Wong won the 100-yard event in 1:00.61 while junior Kira Singhaus (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) was second in 1:01.06. In the 200-yard event, Shi touched first in 2:10.65 with junior Paige Sieffert (Ann Arbor, Mich. /Saline) finishing second in 2:11.26.

Although not winning the 100-yard breaststroke, the Tartans finished two through five with freshman Kimberly Hochstedler (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) pacing the team in 1:08.61, as Wang was right on her heels in 1:08.67. Hochstedler later picked up a win in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:29.40.

Crews won both butterfly events for the day, touching in 2:11.48 in the 200-yard butterfly and 58.76 in the 100-yard butterfly. Wong showed her versatility as she finished second in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.11.

Shi finished the individual swimming events with a victory in the 200-yard IM, as she touched in 2:11.50.

In diving, sophomore Machika Kaku (Irvine, Calif./University) won the 1-meter event with 251.95 points and finished second on the 3-meter board with 242.35 points.

The Tartans will be back in the water on Saturday, January 24 when they host Denison University at 1:00 p.m.
