Six Earn Scholar Recognition from CSCAA

(EVANSTON, Ill.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team was honored by the College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) with a Team Scholar All-America award as six individuals were also named.

The Team Scholar All-America award is presented to college and university swimming and diving teams who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The women's team earned a 3.43 for the spring semester.

Individually, junior Kira Singhaus (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West), sophomore Machika Kaku (Irvine, Calif./University) and freshman Kimberly Hochstedler (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) were Scholar All-Americans as they met the requirements of a grade point average of 3.5 or higher for the semester or cumulative average and competed at the NCAA Championships. All three finished the year as All-Americans finishing in the top 16 at the NCAA Championships. Singhaus and Hochstedler competed on the 400-yard medley relay team which finished 13th. Hochstedler maintained a 4.0 for the year to earn her first award in her first season while the Scholar All-America award marks Singhaus's second. Kaku earned top honors in 2015 for competing in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events while she earned Honorable Mention Scholar All-America last year. The sophomore also completed the year as an All-American, finishing 16th on the 1-meter diving board.

Senior Andie Azofeifa (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County), junior Felicia Wang (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley) and freshman Emma Shi (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) met the requirements for Honorable Mention Scholar All-America. The Honorable Mention Scholar All-America award is presented to college and university swimmers and divers, who have achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, for the semester or cumulative average, and have achieved a "B" time standard, but have not qualified to compete in their respective national championship.

Azofeifa competed at the regional diving meet in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events to earn her award while Shi swam to provisional qualifying times in the 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard IM and 400-yard IM. Wang met the time standard as part of the 200-yard medley relay that set the school record.
