Tartans Start Season With Sweep at Home Quad Meet

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team started the season with a home quad meet with Case Western Reserve University, Clarion University and Gannon University. The Tartans defeated all three schools in dual meet scoring, topping the Spartans 213-86, the Golden Eagles 195-103, and the Golden Knights 204-89.

Starting off the meet was the 200-yard medley relay of sophomore Anna Wong (Solon, Ohio/Solon), senior Felicia Wang (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley), junior Gillian Crews (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) and sophomore Tiana Marrese (Pittsburgh, Pa./South Fayette) which finished first in 1:49.88.

Sophomore Sandra Ho (Hong Kong/Peddie School) paced the Tartans in the 1,000-yard freestyle, winning in 10:57.35, while sophomore Kimberly Hochstedler (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) led a sweep of the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:31.38. Junior Natalie Kronfli (Potomac, Md. / Stone Ridge) was second in 2:33.09 while freshman Cassidy Smith (Carlisle, Mass./Concord-Carlisle Regional) was third in 2:33.25.

Sophomore Mary St. John (Bethesda, Md./Sidwell Friends School) was victorious in the 200-yard butterfly when she touched the wall in 2:14.30 and later won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:25.29.

Another victory for the Tartans came from Crews in the 100-yard butterfly as she touched the wall in 58.94.

Senior Kira Singhaus (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) touched second in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.20 while freshman Hera Miao (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) was second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.78. Another second-place finish came from freshman Allison Caron (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) in the 200-yard backstroke when she finished in 2:11.39.

Sophomore Emma Shi (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) closed out the individual events with a second-place showing in the 200-yard IM when she finished in 2:13.67.

In diving, junior Machika Kaku (Irvine, Calif./University) led the Tartans with a third-place finish on the 3-meter board with 206.95 points and a fourth-place finish on the 1-meter board with 216.60 points. Senior Winona Li (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) placed fourth on the 3-meter board with 206.30 points.

The Tartans will next compete on Saturday, November 7 when they travel to Grove City College to face the Wolverines and the University of Rochester at 1:00 p.m.
