Kaku Sets Pool Record at Home Diving Invitational

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - Junior Machika Kaku (Irvine, Calif./University) set a new school record during the Carnegie Mellon University Diving Invitational on Friday and Saturday, November 13-14 at the Jared L. Cohon University Center pool while she and senior Winona Li (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) met the qualifying mark for the NCAA Regional Diving meet.

Kaku won the 1-meter event by scoring 449.15 points which set the pool record. Her score was 8.65 points off her own school record set in 2014 and met the qualifying standard of 395 points on the 1-meter board following 11 dives.

Li was second on the 1-meter board with a qualifying score of 406.95, which is also a career best mark. Graduate student Andie Azofeifa (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) placed sixth at the meet with a 372.60 score on the 1-meter board.

Li led the Tartans on athe 3-meter board, registering 421.35 points to meet the NCAA Regional qualifying score. Kaku placed sixth with 374.40 points while Azofeifa was seventh with 368.00 points and junior Mallory Evanoff (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Academy) was ninth with 299.05 points.

In order to qualify for the NCAA Diving Regional, a diver must surpass the set scores twice during the season. For the 3-meter board, 410 points are needed following 11 dives and 265 points are needed at a six-dive event. For the 1-meter board, 395 points are needed after 11 dives and 255 points are needed after six dives.
