Tartans Start Competition at UAA Championships

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team started competition at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships with the women's one-meter diving event on Wednesday, February 17 and five swimming events on Thursday, February 18. The team is currently in fifth place after six events.

Senior Winona Li (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) placed fourth in the one-meter diving event with 389.00 points.

Sophomore Mary St. John (Bethesda, Md./Sidwell Friends School) recorded a career-best time in the 200-yard IM when she touched 12th overall in 2:07.99, just shy of an NCAA provisional cut time. In the same event, sophomore Emma Shi (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) placed 14th with a finals time of 2:09.07 after recording a season-best time of 2:08.91 in the preliminaries.

The 200-yard freestyle relay of junior Shieri Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown), sophomore Tiana Marrese (Pittsburgh, Pa./South Fayette), junior Gillian Crews (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) and junior Allison Kirkby (West Chester, Pa./Conestoga) touched the wall in a season-best time of 1:37.23 to place seventh.

The 400-yard medley relay closed the evening with a fifth-place showing when senior Kira Singhaus (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West), sophomore Kimberly Hochstedler (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn), Crews and Kirkby touched in 3:50.88 to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships.

Competition picks up on Friday with seven swimming events and the women's three-meter diving event.
