Tartans Swim Past Clarion in First Home Meet of Season
(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team hosted Division II Clarion University on Saturday, November 5 and defeated the Golden Eagles, 194-101. The Tartans finished first in all 14 swimming events.
The Tartans opened the meet with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay when freshman Mary Day (Warren, N.J./Mount Saint Mary Academy), junior Kim Hochstedler (Mishawaka, Ind.), senior Gillian Crews (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) and freshman Emma Nicklas-Morris (Winston-Salem, N.C./RJ Reynolds) touched in 1:51.67.
Freshman Taylor Brown (San Antonio, Texas/Johnson) won the 1,000-yard freestyle for the second time this season with a time of 10:51.86. Fellow freshman Victoria Feng (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:57.53 while freshman Teagan Goforth (Portland, Ore./Tualatin) touched first in the 100-yard backstroke in 59.85. Goforth also won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:07.43.
Sophomore Cassidy Smith (Carlisle, Mass./Concord-Carlisle Regional) was the first to the wall in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:08.32 beating out two teammates who touched second and third.
Nicklas-Morris led the Tartans in the 200-yard butterfly with a first-place finish in 2:08.79 and later won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:27.89.
Sophomore Ellie Walstad (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Southeast) won the 50-yard freestyle in a season-best 25.39 while freshman Jocelyn Chan (Hillsborough, Calif./Menlo School) won the 100-yard freestyle in 55.24.
Feng out-touched Brown in the 500-yard freestyle to win in 5:14.61 as Brown touched in 5:18.54.
The 100-yard butterfly was won by senior Shieri Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) in a time of 1:00.61 which is her season-best and was less than a second ahead of junior Mary St. John (Bethesda, Md./Sidwell Friends School) in 1:01.05.
Senior Machika Kaku (Irvine, Calif./University) led the Tartans in diving with two third-place finishes. She earned 201.60 points on the 1-meter board and 207.60 points on the 3-meter board.
The Tartans will next host Grove City College and Washington and Lee University on Saturday, November 12 at 11:30 a.m.
