Tartans Split Home Double Dual with Washington and Lee and Grove City

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team hosted Grove City College and Washington and Lee University on Saturday, November 12. The Tartans won five events and defeated the Wolverines, 192-99, while falling to the Generals, 136-126.

Freshman Taylor Brown (San Antonio, Texas/Johnson) earned the first victory of the day for the Tartans when she touched first in the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 10:42.96. Her time was a season best and marked her third victory in the event.

Freshman Emma Nicklas-Morris (Winston-Salem, N.C./RJ Reynolds) led a 1-2 finish for the Tartans in the 200-yard freestyle as she touched in a season-best 1:55.12 and ahead of junior Emma Shi (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) in 1:57.91. Nicklas-Morris also recorded a season-best time in the 100-yard freestyle which she won with a time of 53.50.

Freshman Teagan Goforth (Portland, Ore./Tualatin) was denied a victory in the 100-yard backstroke when she placed second in 59.85 but she made up for it in the 200-yard backstroke with a season-best time of 2:06.15 to earn her third win in the event for the season.

The Tartans finished 2-3 in the 200-yard breaststroke with freshman Victoria Feng (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) recording a season-best time of 2:26.13 to place second and junior Kim Hochstedler (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) touching third in 2:27.18.

Brown was third to the wall in the 500-yard freestyle despite finishing in a season-best 5:16.89 and Nicklas-Morris earned her third win of the afternoon in the 200-yard IM when she touched in a season-best 2:08.61.

Diving wasn't factored into the team scores however, senior Machika Kaku (Irvine, Calif./University) won both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. Kaku tallied 256.58 points on the 1-meter board and 293.33 points on the 3-meter board to earn her first regional qualifying scores on each board for the season. Senior Mallory Evanoff (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Academy) earned 214.42 points on the 1-meter board to finish second and 214.43 points on the 3-meter board to also finish second.

The swimmers will be off from competition until December 1-3 when they travel to Kenyon College for the Total Performance Invitational while the divers will host a meet on Friday, November 18 and Saturday, November 19.
