Tartans Record Three "B" Cut Times at TPSC Invitational

(GAMBIER, Ohio) - Senior Machika Kaku (Irvine, Calif./University) earned a victory in diving Friday night as the Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team competed for a second day at the Kenyon College Total Performance Sports Camp Invitational.

The Tartans continue to hold fifth place with 594.5 points with the University of Pennsylvania leading with 1,566 points.

Kaku earned the diving victory on the 1-meter board when she finished with an 11-dive score of 448.65. Senior Mallory Evanoff (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Academy) was third in the event with a career-best 405.55 points.

Freshman Emma Nicklas-Morris (Winston-Salem, N.C./RJ Reynolds) who set the school record in the 200-yard freestyle Thursday night, finished fourth overall in the 200-yard butterfly with a provisional cut time of 2:05.31. Junior Mary St. John (Bethesda, Md./Sidwell Friends School) placed eighth in the event, touching the wall in 2:07.82. Her preliminary time of 2:06.82 is a season-best.

Freshman Anna Riegger (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) recorded a season-best time in the 200-yard freestyle when she finished 24th overall and fourth in her heat with a time of 1:56.07.

Sophomore Cassidy Smith (Carlisle, Mass./Concord-Carlisle Regional) led four Tartans in the second final of the 100-yard breaststroke when she won the heat in a "B" cut and career-best time of 1:05.10. Junior Kim Hochstedler (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) was third in the heat with a season-best time of 1:06.02.

Senior Marisa Giglio (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) finished 17th overall in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.57 while freshman Mary Day (Warren, N.J./Mount Saint Mary Academy) was 19th in 59.72.

Nicklas-Morris swam her second top final event of the evening when she reached the 400-yard IM final after a top swim of 4:26.79 in the preliminaries. Again, she met a "B" cut and eventually finished seventh in a time of 4:28.31.

The last individual event of the evening was the 50-yard freestyle. Freshman Victoria Feng (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) made the C-final and finished fifth in the heat and 25th overall with a season-best time of 24.43.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of senior Shieri Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown), Feng, junior Emma Shi (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield), and senior Allison Kirkby (West Chester, Pa./Conestoga) placed ninth in a time of 1:38.16 while the 400-yard medley relay touched in 3:53.19 behind the efforts of freshman Teagan Goforth (Portland, Ore./Tualatin), Smith, senior Gillian Crews (Fairfax, Va./Oakton), and Kirkby.

Competition concludes Saturday with preliminaries at 9:30 a.m. and finals at 5:30 p.m.
