Bamforth, Kaku Receive UAA Diver of the Week Awards

Dec. 6 - (ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – Carnegie Mellon University sophomore diver Gabe Bamforth (Cambridge, Mass./CRLS) and senior diver Machika Kaku (Irvine, Calif./University) were honored by the University Athletic Association (UAA) as divers of the week following their respective record-breaking performances at the Total Performance Sports Camp Invitational hosted by Kenyon College on December 1 through December 3. The award is the third for Bamforth this year and second for Kaku.

Bamforth, who set both school diving records as a freshman, topped his former career highs at the meet. On Friday, Bamforth scored 547.50 points on the 3-meter board to surpass his previous record by 12.6 points and on Saturday topped his new record set in the preliminaries on Friday (517.95) with a score of 531.35 points on the 1-meter. He won both events and set the pool record in the 1-meter.

Kaku broke a 10-year-old record by 19.15 points when she earned 492.70 points after 11 dives on the 3-meter board Saturday. She won that event and the 1-meter diving event on Friday night with a score of 448.65.

Both divers have solidified their entrance into the NCAA Regional Diving Championships to take place in late February. It will be Kaku's fourth appearance at the regional and Bamforth's second.

The next event for the swimming and diving team will be on January 14 at home against Westminster College and SUNY Geneseo at 1:00 p.m.
