Tartans Compete at Denison

(GRANVILLE, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team traveled to Granville, Ohio to face Denison University on Saturday, January 21. The Tartans fell 174-115 and touched second in three events.

Freshman Taylor Brown (San Antonio, Texas/Johnson) finished the 1,000-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle in third place with times of 10:47.99 and 5:18.58.  Junior Emma Shi (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) touched third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:58.73 and third in the 200-yard IM in 2:12.86.

Sophomore Cassidy Smith (Carlisle, Mass./Concord-Carlisle Regional) was the first Tartan to finish the 100-yard breaststroke when she was third in a time of 1:07.85.

Freshman Emma Nicklas-Morris (Winston-Salem, N.C./RJ Reynolds) picked up a second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly when she finished the race in 2:08.40.

Freshman Victoria Feng (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) swam the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 24.87, taking third place, before classmate Teagan Goforth (Portland, Ore./Tualatin) touched second in the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:07.67.

Another third-place finish for the Tartans came from junior Kim Hochstedler (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) in the 200-yard breaststroke. Hochstedler finished the race in 2:27.02.

Senior Shieri Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) placed second in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.21 while fellow senior Gillian Crews (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) was third in 1:00.76.

In diving, freshman Megan Roche (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) recorded a season-best score of 336.75 points on the 3-meter board. Seniors Tammy Luk (Little Neck, N.Y./Townsend Harris) and Mallory Evanoff (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Academy) also recorded season-best scores with point totals of 310.65 and 293.63, respectively. All three also improved on their previous season performances on the 1-meter board with Luk leading the pack with a score of 361.35.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Feng, senior Allison Kirkby (West Chester, Pa./Conestoga), Suzuka, and Smith finished the meet with a first-place showing in a time of 1:40.60.

The Tartans will next compete at the University of Pittsburgh on Saturday, January 28 at 11:30 a.m.
