Nicklas-Morris Places Fifth in 400-yard IM at NCAA Championships

(SHENANDOAH, Texas) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team earned 14 more points at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday, March 16 when freshman Emma Nicklas-Morris (Winston-Salem, N.C./RJ Reynolds) swam in the finals of the 400-yard IM.

Nicklas-Morris earned her second All-America honor of the meet when she placed fifth Thursday in the 400-yard IM. Her time of 4:23.22 topped her time of 4:24.36 from the preliminaries and bettered her previous school record of 4:25.31 set at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships in February.

With her finish Thursday, Nicklas-Morris became the second women's swimmer to earn All-America status in the 400-yard IM. Jo Wollschlaeger was a three-time All-American in the event in 1989, 1990 and 1991.

Junior Mary St. John (Bethesda, Md./Sidwell Friends School) just missed competing in the consolation finals of the 400-yard IM when she finished 17th in the preliminaries with a time of 4:30.42.

Both Nicklas-Morris and St. John will compete in their final events of the meet on Friday when they race in the 200-yard butterfly. Also scheduled to swim on Friday is junior Kim Hochstedler (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) who will compete in the 100-yard breaststroke.
