Tartan Women Top Clarion, 212-88, in Second Meet of the Season

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team hosted Division II Clarion University on Saturday, November 4 and won the dual meet 212-88 after winning 12 events and sweeping six.

Freshman Stefanie McMillan (Vancouver, Wash. / Skyview) touched first in the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 10:47.17 which was five seconds faster than her previous best time for the season. The freshman also bettered her time in the 500-yard freestyle when she won the event in 5:17.89.

Sophomore Emma Nicklas-Morris (Winston-Salem, N.C. / RJ Reynolds) led a sweep of the 200-yard freestyle by finishing in 1:57.21 whjle freshman Jessica Chau (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood) bettered her previous best time in the 100-yard backstroke when she won the event in 59.06.

Senior Kim Hochstedler (Mishawaka, Ind. / Penn) led a sweep of the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.29 with junior Cassidy Smith (Carlisle, Mass. / Concord-Carlisle Regional) touching in 1:08.55 and freshman Eliza Bell (Hopewell, N.J. / Hopewell Valley Central) touching in 1:08.87. Hochstedler also led a sweep of the 200-yard breatstroke with a time of 2:24.17.

Freshman Jessica Li (Clarksville, Md. / River Hill) was also a double winner for the day when she won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:07.70 and the 100-yard freestyle, which the Tartans swept, in 53.17.

The 200-yard backstroke was won by sophomore Teagan Goforth (Portland, Ore. / Tualatin) who was more than two seconds faster than the second-place finisher in 2:09.74.

In diving, freshman Maddie Mianzo (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) was the top Tartan on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards where she placed fourth with 186.83 points on the 1-meter and fifth on the 3-meter with 180.75 points.

Freshman Sophy Peng (Fremont, Calif. / American) touched first in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.05 with senior Mary St. John (Bethesda, Md. / Sidwell Friends School) touching second in 1:00.29 and senior Anna Wong (Solon, Ohio / Solon) finishing third in 1:00.46.

The Tartans will next compete against Grove City College and Washington and Lee University on Saturday, November 11 at home. The meet is set to begin at 11:30 a.m.
