Tartans Win Double-Dual Meet with Grove City and Washington and Lee

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team hosted its third straight meet on Saturday, November 11 when Grove City College and Washington and Lee University visited Pittsburgh. The Tartans won the double-dual meet with scores of 190-71 against Washington and Lee and 215-46 against Grove City.

Sophomore Taylor Brown (San Antonio, Texas/Johnson) swam to a season-best time in both the 1,000-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle when she won each event. She closed the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:45.15 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:16.30. Freshman teammate Stefanie McMillan (Vancouver, Wash./Skyview) was second in 10:48.83 in the 1,000-yard freestyle while freshman Megan Christy (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) recorded a season-best time and placed second in the 500-yard freestyle in 6:16.95.

Freshman Jessica Li (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) won three events on the day with the first coming in the 200-yard freestyle. She won the event for the second time this season when she touched in 1:56.93 and ahead of Christy in 1:57.29. Li later won the 100-yard freestyle for the second time this season in 53.43. Sophomore Emma Nicklas-Morris (Winston-Salem, N.C./RJ Reynolds) touched second in a season-best time of 53.88. Li's third win of the day came in the 100-yard butterfly when she touched first in 57.32, also an event she won for the second time this year.

The Tartans swept the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard backstroke with freshman Jessica Chau (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) touching first in both events. Chau won the 100-yard backstroke in 59.12 and the 200-yard backstroke in a season-best time of 2:04.67. Senior Anna Wong (Solon, Ohio/Solon) was second in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.22 with sophomore Mary Day (Warren, N.J./Mount Saint Mary) in third in 1:00.55. In the 200-yard backstroke, sophomore Teagan Goforth (Portland, Ore./Tualatin) touched second in 2:09.05 with senior Emma Shi (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) finishing third in 2:12.52.

Senior Kim Hochstedler (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) improved upon her national top 10 time in the 100-yard breaststroke when she won the event in 1:06.39. In the 200-yard breaststroke, Hochstedler was up against the fifth-ranked swimmer in the nation in Washington and Lee's Emily Hageboeck. The two pushed each other until the end with both improving their season-best times. Hageboeck won in 2:21.73 with Hochstedler touching second in 2:21.93.

Nicklas-Morris shaved nearly a second off her season-best time in the 200-yard butterfly when she won the event in 2:08.54. The sophomore also won the 200-yard IM when she finished the event in 2:09.57. Chau was just behind Nicklas-Morris in a time of 2:09.68.

Sophomore Victoria Feng (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) improved her season top-time in the 50-yard freestyle when she won the sprint in 24.77. Freshman Sophy Peng (Fremont, Calif./American) was second in the event in 25.20.

The last win of the day came in the 200-yard freestyle relay when Peng, freshman Emma Graham (Mount Lebanon, Pa./Mount Lebanon), Shi and Day finished in a season-best 1:38.65.

The Tartans will next be in the pool on Thursday, November 30 at the Total Performance Invitational at Kenyon College.
