Hochstedler and Nicklas-Morris Earn All-UAA Friday at UAA Championships

(ATLANTA, Ga.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team set three school records while five met NCAA provisional qualifying times at the second day of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships hosted by Emory University. The Tartans are currently in fifth place with final competition set for Saturday.

The 200-yard medley relay team broke the school record when the quad of sophomore Mary Day (Warren, N.J. / Mount Saint Mary Academy), senior Kim Hochstedler (Mishawaka, Ind. / Penn), freshman Jessica Li (Clarksville, Md. / River Hill), and junior Cassidy Smith (Carlisle, Mass. / Concord-Carlisle Regional) finished the race in 1:45.43 to place fifth.

Sophomore Emma Nicklas-Morris (Winston-Salem, N.C. / RJ Reynolds) earned All-UAA third team in the 400-yard IM after touching third in 4:26.01. Senior Mary St. John (Bethesda, Md. / Sidwell Friends School) finished the same heat seventh overall in 4:27.66.

Li led the Tartans in the 100-yard butterfly when she won the second heat to place ninth overall in a time of 56.55.

Senior Emma Shi (Penfield, N.Y. / Penfield) continued to have a great final UAA meet after a career-best in the 200-yard IM Thursday with a 13th-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle in a career-best time of 1:53.64.

In the 100-yard breaststroke, Hochstedler and Smith both finished the finals with career-best times as Hochstedler's time of 1:03.51 broke Smith's school record and placed her second. Smith finished Friday's event fourth overall in 1:03.70.

Day also set a new career-best time Friday and set a new school record in the 100-yard backstroke when she finished fifth in 56.21.

The 800-yard freestyle relay of freshman Emma Graham (Mount Lebanon, Pa. / Mount Lebanon), Nicklas-Morris, freshman Megan Christy (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny), and Shi closed the meet with a fourth-place finish in 7:40.22.

Freshmen Maddie Mianzo (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) and Lillie Widmayer (Old Bridge N.J. / West Windsor Plainsboro) both earned placement to the NCAA Diving Regional after recording career-best scores of 425.20 and 420.20 in 3-meter diving. Mianzo took sixth place while Widmayer placed seventh.

The final day of the championships is Saturday with preliminaries starting at 10 a.m. with finals set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
