Finals Finishes Lead Tartans on Second Day of NCAA Championships

(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team continued to earn points at the 2018 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday when competitors finished in the top 16 in two events.

Sophomore Emma Nicklas-Morris (Winston-Salem, N.C. RJ Reynolds) earned the third All-America honor of her career by finishing seventh in the 400-yard IM when she touched the wall in 4.24.82 Thursday night. It marked the second straight year Nicklas-Morris finished in the top 8 of the 400-yard IM and follows her 13th-place finish last night in the 200-yard IM. Joining Nicklas-Morris in the evening finals swim of the 400-yard IM was senior Mary St. John (Bethesda, Md. Sidwell Friends School). St. John picked up a 15th-place finish in the even in 4:29.07 after making the consolation final with a time of 4:26.16. The All-America Honorable Mention finish for St. John was the first of her career in the 400-yard IM and second time she's placed in the top 16 in an event at the NCAA meet.

Later in the evening, Nicklas-Morris anchored the 400-yard medley relay that finished 13th in 3:48.90. Joining Nicklas-Morris on the relay that earned the third All-America Honorable Mention honor in the event in program history was sophomore Mary Day (Warren, N.J. / Mount Saint Mary Academy), senior Kim Hochstedler (Mishawaka, Ind. / Penn), and freshman Jessica Li (Clarksville, Md. / River Hill).

The third day of competition kicks off Friday morning with the 200-yard butterfly, 100-yard backstroke, and 100-yard breaststroke, with the 800-yard freestyle relay taking place in the evening session.
