Women’s Swimming Honored for Academics by CSCAA

(NORFOLK, Va.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team was honored by the College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) with a Team Scholar All-America award as 12 individuals were also named CSCAA Scholar All-Americans.

The Team Scholar All-America award is presented to college and university swimming and diving teams who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The women's team earned a 3.57 GPA for the spring semester and also earned the award following the fall semester in which they recorded a 3.33 team GPA.

Individuals who achieved a 3.50 GPA or better for the year and either met a provisional time standard or competed at the NCAA Championships were honored.

Nine women who competed at the NCAA Championships met the academic standard as seniors Kim Hochstedler (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn), Emma Shi (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield), and Mary St. John (Bethesda, Md./Sidwell Friends School), junior Cassidy Smith (Carlisle, Mass./Concord-Carlisle Regional), sophomores Teagan Goforth (Portland, Ore./Tualatin) and Emma Nicklas-Morris (Winston-Salem, N.C./RJ Reynolds), and freshman Megan Christy (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny), Emma Graham (Mount Lebanon, Pa./Mount Lebanon), and Jessica Li (Clarksville, Md./River Hill), were honored as Scholar All-Americans.

Hochstedler completed her academic career with a cumulative 4.00 GPA as a statistics and psychology major. She was also named an Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) for the second time and earned a post graduate scholarship from the NCAA. In the pool, Hochstedler set the school record in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke on her way to an All-America honor in the 200-yard event at the NCAA Championships.

St. John made her third appearance at the NCAA Championships after qualifying for the national meet in the 200-yard butterfly and 400-yard IM. She earned All-America Honorable Mention in the 400-yard IM this year. The mathematical sciences major earned a 3.69 GPA for the year and a 4.00 for the spring semester.

Nicklas-Morris earned her second CSCAA Scholar All-America honor and finished in the seventh in the 400-yard IM and in the top 16 in the 200-yard butterfly and the 200-yard IM at the NCAA Championships. The second-year competitor was also part of the 400-yard medley relay team that set a new school record and finished 13th in the nation. A psychology major, Nicklas-Morris achieved a 3.90 GPA for the year including a 4.00 showing in the spring.

Shi earned her first Scholar All-America award after qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the 200-yard IM. She earned honorable mention as a junior and a freshman. Shi completed her degree in decision science and human-computer interaction and recorded a 3.76 GPA for the year.

Smith held down a 3.83 GPA in the spring semester after swimming at the NCAA Championships in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard breaststroke. Goforth joined Smith at the NCAA Championships by qualifying in the 400-yard IM and she earned a 3.72 GPA for the year and a 3.88 for the spring semester while taking classes toward a civil engineering degree.

After a year of taking classes at Carnegie Mellon, Christy earned a 3.79 GPA in policy and management, Graham a 3.54 GPA in engineering, and Li a 3.15 GPA with a 3.57 GPA in the spring in information systems.

Earning Scholar All-America Honorable Mention for meeting provisional time standards during the year are sophomores Victoria Feng (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) and Taylor Brown (San Antonio, Texas/Johnson), and freshman Lillie Widmayer (Old Bridge N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro).

Feng earned her second honor after maintaining a 3.66 GPA for the year as a mechanical engineering major. She recorded a provisional qualifying time in the 200-yard breaststroke. Brown recorded a 3.51 GPA for the year with a 3.59 in the spring as a civil engineering and engineering and public policy major. Her provisional qualifying time came in the 1,650-yard freestyle. And Widmayer dove at the NCAA Zone 4 Regionals in her first year of competition after earning a 3.60 GPA in the spring semester as an engineering student.
