Tartans Begin Competition at Kenyon Total Performance Invitational

(GAMBIER, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team started competition at the Kenyon College Total Performance Invitational on Thursday. Four swimmers reached the top finals flight after preliminary showings.

Junior Emma Nicklas-Morris (Winston-Salem, N.C. / RJ Reynolds) placed fourth in the 200-yard IM after touching in 2:07.08 in the finals. Juniors Teagan Goforth (Portland, Ore. / Tualatin) and Victoria Feng (Hopkinton, Mass. / Hopkinton) also swam in the top flight of the 200-yard IM, finishing ninth and tenth, respectively in 2:11.59 and 2:12.98. Both reached the finals with season-best times of 2:09.67 and 2:09.81.

In the 50-yard freestyle, senior Cassidy Smith (Carlisle, Mass. / Concord-Carlisle Regional) finished in 24.24 to place eighth. Freshman Madeline Hoedemaker (Pennington, N.J. / Hopewell Valley Central) recorded a career-best time in the 50-yard freestyle during the preliminaries with a time of 24.41. She finished 13th overall in 24.58 in the finals.

Freshman Kierstyn Cassidy (Waynesville, Ohio / Waynesville) was the top Tartan in the 500-yard freestyle, finished 14th overall in 5:05.42. Junior Taylor Brown (San Antonio, Texas / Johnson) wasn't far behind in 5:07.99 in 16th place.

The 200-yard freestyle relay of Smith, junior Mary Day (Warren, N.J. / Mount Saint Mary Academy), Hoedemaker and Feng touched fourth in a season-best time of 1:37.03 while the 400-yard medley relay of Day, Smith, Nicklas-Morris and Hoedemaker was seventh in 3:56.65.

Competition continues on Friday with preliminaries of the 400-yard IM, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard backstroke kicking off at 10:30 a.m. Relay events will be the 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay and will take place in the evening session along with finals of 3-meter diving.
