Tartans Finish Fifth at UAA Championships

(CHICAGO, Ill.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team finished fifth at the 2019 University Athletic Association (UAA) Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by the University of Chicago.

Sophomore Jessica Chau (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood) swam to a sixth-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke finals, touching in 2:04.32, as junior Emma Nicklas-Morris (Winston-Salem, N.C. / RJ Reynolds) was sixth in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:06.37. Nicklas-Morris' time of 2:05.00 in the preliminaries was an NCAA provisional cut time.

Three Tatans picked up eighth-place finishes for the night. Freshman Kierstyn Cassidy (Waynesville, Ohio / Waynesville) placed eighth in the 1,650-yard freestyle in an NCAA provisional cut time of 17:29.59 while senior Cassidy Smith (Carlisle, Mass. / Concord-Carlisle Regional) was eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:25.49. Sophomore Lillie Widmayer (Old Bridge N.J. / West Windsor Plainsboro) earned an eighth-place tally after scoring 384.95 on the 1-meter diving board.

The 400-yard freestyle relay of Smith, junior Mary Day (Warren, N.J. / Mount Saint Mary Academy), freshman Madeline Hoedemaker (Pennington, N.J. / Hopewell Valley Central), and Nicklas-Morris finished the night off with a fifth-place finish in a time of 3:29.72
