NCAA Qualifying Times Highlight Day 2 of UAA Championships

(CHICAGO, Ill.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team continued competition at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships hosted by the University of Chicago on Friday, February 14. The Tartans are currently in fifth place heading into the final day of events on Saturday, February 15.

Junior Lillie Widmayer (Old Bridge N.J. / West Windsor Plainsboro) placed eighth on the 3-meter diving board Friday evening with 429.70 points in the finals. Freshman Emilia Schwallie (Weston, Mass. / Weston) just missed making the finals and finished ninth overall with 384.50 points during preliminaries. Junior Maddie Mianzo (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) was 12th overall with 367.25 points on the 3-meter board.

The 200-yard medley relay of freshman Bonnie Wang (Vancouver, BC / Collingwood School), freshman Reilly McManus (Ridgefield, Conn. / Rye Country Day), freshman Miya Higuchi (Glendale, Calif. / Crescenta Valley) and freshman Mathea Myrvold (Raleigh, N.C. / Wakefield) finished fifth in 1:45.84 to start the evening's swimming events.

Senior Emma Nicklas-Morris (Winston-Salem, N.C. / RJ Reynolds) finished sixth in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:29.86. Her time of 4:27.59 during the preliminaries is a season-best and NCAA B Cut qualifier. Three Tartans swam in the B final with senior Taylor Brown (San Antonio, Texas / Johnson) winning the heat in 4:29.04. Junior Jessica Chau (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood) was a touch behind her in 4:29.15 with both earning an NCAA B Cut time.

Freshman Tiffany Tseng (Westford, Mass. / Westford Academy) was the top Tartan in the 100-yard butterfly as she touched 10th overall in 57.12. Freshman Clare Brown (Grantham, N.J. / Lebanon) placed 15th overall in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:54.15 with a season-best time of 1:53.87 in the preliminaries.

McManus recorded a season-best time of 1:05.09 in the finals of the 100-yard breaststroke when she finished eighth for the Tartans. Freshman Eva Guo (Flushing, N.Y. / Townsend Harris) won the B final of the 100-yard breaststroke in a season-best time of 1:06.14 with senior Victoria Feng (Hopkinton, Mass. / Hopkinton) earning 13th place in 1:07.70.

Tseng swam in the championship final of the 100-yard backstroke and finished seventh in 56.55. Her time of 56.50 in the preliminaries is a B Cut qualifier. Senior Mary Day (Warren, N.J. / Mount Saint Mary Academy) was 14th overall in the event in 57.78 with Wang touching 15th in 57.80.

The 800-yard freestyle relay of Nicklas-Morris, Tseng, Clare Brown and senior Teagan Goforth (Portland, Ore. / Tualatin) closed the meet with a fifth-place finish in 7:38.23.

Competition concludes Saturday with the 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, 1,650-yard freestyle and 400-yard freestyle relay.
