Tartans Place Second At Case Western Reserve Dual Meet

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team had its first dual meet of the season on Saturday, October 30 at Case Western Reserve University. The Tartans finished second to the Spartans by a 176-124 score after winning four events.

Diving opened the meet and sophomore Kelli Kuramoto (Los Altos, Calif. / Los Altos) won the 1-meter event with 264.55 points after six dives. The score for Kuramoto is her first NCAA qualifying point total of the season on the 1-meter board. The sophomore finished the day with a first-place showing on the 3-meter board with a score of 257.55 which is a season-best score.

The 200-yard medley relay got faster this week with a time of 1:49.38 from junior Bonnie Wang (Vancouver, BC / Collingwood School), freshman Jackie Ruhnke (Bridgewater, N.J. / Bridgewater-Raritan), freshman Carolann Kimock (Old Bridge, N.J. / Saint John Vianney) and junior Mathea Myhrvold (Raleigh, N.C. / Wakefield). The group finished second by one one-hundredth of a second.

Wang earned a first-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:06.19 with Ruhnke finishing first in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:29.07.

The Tartans brought home a bunch of second-place finishes starting with senior Kierstyn Cassidy (Waynesville, Ohio / Waynesville) in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:46.69. Cassidy also finished second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:17.60. Wang touched second in the 100-yard backstroke in 58.09 with junior Tiffany Tseng (Westford, Mass. / Westford Academy) touching third in 58.95.

Junior Reilly McManus (Ridgefield, Conn. / Rye Country Day) picked up a second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:09.56 with junior Eva Guo (Flushing, N.Y. / Townsend Harris) touching just after McManus in 1:09.84.

Swimming the 200-yard butterfly for the first time in competition was Kimock who finished second in 2:11.11 while Myhrvold was second in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.96. Kimock later finished second in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.17 with junior Miya Higuchi (Glendale, Calif. / Crescenta Valley) touching in the same time.

The 200-yard freestyle relay of Tseng, graduate student Emma Graham (Mount Lebanon, Pa. / Mount Lebanon), Kimock and Myhrvold swam to a season-best 1:40.24 and placed second to close out the meet.

The Tartans will next compete at home when they host Gettysburg College for a dual meet on Saturday, November 6 at 11:00 a.m.
