No. 8 Tartans Take Down Swarthmore 9-0

(CLAREMONT, Calif.) - The No. 8 Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team opened its spring break trip in California with a 9-0 win against Swarthmore College on Monday, March 10 in Claremont, Calif. The Tartans are now 8-1 on the year as Swarthmore drops to 0-3.

The Tartans started with an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles by junior Angela Pratt (Saratoga, Calif./St. Francis) and sophomore Brooke Tsu (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame). Junior Bryn Raschke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) and freshman Vanessa Pavia (Thornwood, N.Y./Academy of our Lady of Good Counsel) extended their winning streak to eight with an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles and junior Lydia Utkin () and freshman Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) made it 3-0 with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.

Sophomore Abbey Hamstra (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley) was the first to finish singles play, as she won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Pratt won the fifth point for the Tartans at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win as freshman Margaret Anne Smith (Singapore/Singapore American School) won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.

Other wins for the Tartans came from Tsu at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-0, Pavia at No. 1 singles 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 and sophomore Elizabeth Martin (St. Simons Island, Ga./Frederica Academy) at No. 4 singles 6-7 (1-7), 6-4, 1-0.

The Tartans have Tuesday off before playing three in a row, starting with University of Redlands at 4:00 p.m. PT on Wednesday, March 12.
