No. 9 Tartans Defeat No. 20 Washington and Lee 5-4

(MONROEVILLE, Pa.) - The ninth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team dropped 20th-ranked Washington and Lee University by a 5-4 score on Saturday, March 29 after the scheduled outdoor match was forced inside due to rain. The Tartans are now 12-3 on the year while the Generals fall to 11-2.

Junior Angela Pratt (Saratoga, Calif./St. Francis) and freshman Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) won their No. 2 doubles match 8-3 as the No. 3 pair for the Tartans fell 8-4. The Generals then took a 2-1 lead with an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles, holding off a comeback attempt by junior Bryn Raschke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) and freshman Vanessa Pavia (Thornwood, N.Y./Academy of our Lady of Good Counsel) who trailed 7-3.

Pavia used that doubles momentum for her singles match as she was the first to finish. She knotted the score at 2-2 with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles. Senior Katie Cecil (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) then won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles before the Generals re-tied the score with a win at No. 1 singles.

It took two three set matches before the Tartans secured the their 12th win of the season. One of those came from Torres at No. 4 singles who came from behind to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to extend her singles win streak to six. Sophomore Brooke Tsu (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame) also fell behind 1-0 after she dropped the first set 6-4 but she rallied to win the next two, 6-4, 6-1, to win the match point for the Tartans at No. 5 singles

The Tartans return to action on Friday, April 4 when they travel to Grove City College for a 4:00 p.m. match.
