No. 9 Women’s Tennis Strong Doubles Play Leads to Victory at No. 27 Case Western Reserve

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team, ranked ninth nationally, traveled north to play University Athletic Association (UAA) opponent Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, April 5 in a non-UAA match. The Tartans improved their dual record to 13-3 with a 6-3 victory over the Spartans who move to 7-7.

The Tartans started the day with a sweep in doubles play to lead 3-0 heading into singles.  The tandem of senior Katie Cecil (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) and sophomore Brooke Tsu (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame) knotted the first point for the Cardinal and Gray with an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles.  Junior Angela Pratt (Saratoga, Calif./St. Francis) and freshman Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) made the score 2-0 with an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles.

The third and final point in doubles play came down to the No. 1 match. Junior Bryn Raschke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) and freshman Vanessa Pavia (Thornwood, N.Y./Academy of our Lady of Good Counsel) trailed 5-4 before winning the last four games to claim an 8-5 victory that finished off the sweep for the Tartans.  

With wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles by Pratt and Pavia, the Tartans secured the victory.  They both won in straight sets with Pratt winning 6-4, 6-1 and Pavia victorious 6-1, 6-0. In the No. 3 spot, Cecil also won in straight sets by the score of 6-1, 6-4.  

The Tartans return to action on Friday, April 18 when they host Division I Duquesne University at 5:00 p.m.
