Cecil and Duncan Named UAA Athletes of the Week

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University tennis programs swept the University Athletic Association (UAA) weekly awards following this past weekend's play. Senior Katie Cecil (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) was named on the women's side while junior Will Duncan (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) was honored for the men.

Cecil helped the eighth-ranked Tartans improve to 15-3 overall with two victories last weekend including a win over Division I Duquesne University.  The senior turned in a perfect mark, winning a pair of singles and doubles matches.  Cecil won both singles matches in straight sets defeating Zuzanna Stelmaszak of Duquesne, 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 3 spot on Friday before topping Taylor Diffley of Kenyon College, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 1.  Cecil paired with Brook Tsu at No. 3 doubles to win 9-7 over Duquesne and teamed with Lydia Utkin to come away with an 8-2 victory over Kenyon at No. 3.

Duncan guided the Cardinal and Gray, ranked ninth-nationally, to an impressive home victory over #11 Kenyon.  Duncan teamed with junior Christian Heaney-Secord to collect a huge win at No. 1 doubles, 8-6, over Tim Rosensteel and Sam Geier, battling back from a 4-2 deficit to help the Tartans to a 2-1 lead after doubles play. The junior fell behind in his first set at No. 3 singles but rallied to win his match in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, giving the Tartans a 4-1 lead in a match they won 7-2.

Both the men and women will be in action at the UAA Tennis Championships with the men starting play on Thursday, April 24 against the University of Rochester at 9:00 a.m. The women also drew the Yellowjackets in the first round and their match is set for 9:00 a.m. on Friday, April 25.
