Tartans Open Year with Two 9-0 Wins

(GROVE CITY, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team opened the 2014-2015 season with a 9-0 victory at Grove City College on Monday, September 8 and topped Seton Hill University 9-0 at home.

At Grove City, the Tartans started with a 3-0 record through doubles play as junior Abbey Hamstra (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley) and freshman Kalyani Narayan (Saratoga, Calif./Saratoga) won 8-0 in the third position.

Junior Brooke Tsu (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame) played No. 1 singles and won 6-3, 6-1 over Caroline McGuire while freshman Stacy Chang (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) played No. 2 singles and won 6-2, 6-0. Narayan won her No. 5 singles match without surrendering a game and Hamstra fell in just one game at No. 6 singles, winning 6-0, 6-1.

Senior Bryn Raschke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) also took to the court on Monday, winning 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles and 8-2 at No. 1 doubles with Chang. Freshman Cori Sidell (Redwood Shores, Calif./Carlmont) also played, defeating her opponent 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles while pairing with Tsu at No. 2 doubles to win 8-3.

In the 9-0 win at home versus Seton Hill, sophomore Vanessa Pavia (Thornwood, N.Y./Academy of our Lady of Good Counsel) won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles while senior Angela Pratt (Saratoga, Calif./St. Francis) won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Senior Lydia Utkin (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) and sophomore Margaret Anne Smith (Singapore/Singapore American School) both won without surrendering a game at No. 5 singles and No. 6 singles, respectively.

Freshman Katie Lai (Hagatna, Guam/St. Andrew's Episcopal School) won her first collegiate match 6-0, 6-4 at No. 4 singles and paired with Utkin to win 8-4 at No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) played No. 3 singles and won 6-4, 6-3.

The Tartans will be in action again when they host their annual invitational on Friday, September 12 through Sunday, September 14.
