Tartans Begin Spring with 8-1 Win Against Slippery Rock

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team started the spring season with an 8-1 win against Division II Slippery Rock University on Friday, February 6, indoors at The Club in Monroeville, Pennsylvania.

The Tartans (4-0) picked up all three doubles victories as the No. 3 pair of sophomore Vanessa Pavia (Thornwood, N.Y./Academy of our Lady of Good Counsel) and freshman Stacy Chang (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) won 8-0 to start the scoring. The No. 2 pair of senior Angela Pratt (Saratoga, Calif./St. Francis) and sophomore Nicolle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) then won 8-2 before senior Bryn Raschke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) and freshman Cori Sidell (Redwood Shores, Calif./Carlmont) won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles.

In singles, Sidell got things started with a 6-0, 6-0 win, as Torres finished next, defeating Nina Barbano 6-3, 6-1. At No. 4 singles, junior Brooke Tsu (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame) defeated Stephanie Fortier 6-2, 6-0 while Chang swept Courtney Gallagher at No. 5 singles.

Raschke finished off the scoring for the Tartans at No. 6 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 victory.

The Tartans will be back in action Saturday, February 7 against Division I Duquesne University at 5:00 p.m. The match will be played at Alpha Tennis in Harmar, Pennsylvania.
