No. 5 Tartans Defeat No. 15 Chicago to Return to NCAA Quarterfinals

(CHICAGO, Ill.) - The fifth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team defeated 15th-ranked University of Chicago on Sunday, May 10 by a 5-1 score to advance to the national quarterfinals of the 2015 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship for the second consecutive year. The win improves the Tartans' record to 17-6 on the season.

Sophomore Vanessa Pavia (Thornwood, N.Y./Academy of our Lady of Good Counsel) and freshman Stacy Chang (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) started the scoring with an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles for the Tartans. After Chicago tied it at 1-all with an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles, sophomore Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) and junior Brooke Tsu (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame) gave the Cardinal and Gray the lead with a 9-7 victory at No. 3 doubles.

The Tartans' advantage grew when senior Bryn Raschke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6 singles. Pavia then finished her No. 1 singles match with a 6-3, 7-5 win to put the Tartans within one-point of victory.

The last point came via Tsu at No. 4 singles when she defeated Lucy Tang, 6-4, 7-5.

The move to the national quarterfinals marks the fifth out of the last seven years the Tartans have advanced.

Play continues in Mason, Ohio, with the Tartans facing third-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Monday, May 18 at a time to be determined. Earlier this season, the Tartans fell 7-2 to CMS on the Athenas' home court.
