#12 Tartans Rally to Top #17 Mary Washington, 5-4

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The 12th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team rallied against 17th-ranked University of Mary Washington on Saturday, April 8 at home to win 5-4 and move to 13-6 for the season. The Eagles dropped to 16-4 for the year.

The Tartans earned their first point of the match at third doubles when sophomore Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) and junior Katie Lai (Hagatna, Guam/St. Andrew's Episcopal School) won 8-3 to give the Tartans a 1-0 lead.

As the Tartans trailed 2-1 following doubles play, Lai pulled them even with a 6-2, 6-0 win at sixth singles.

Scoring went back-and-forth from there with Tartan junior Cori Sidell (Redwood Shores, Calif./Carlmont) winning 6-3, 6-2 at second singles, Mary Washington winning at fourth singles, Vizelman coming from down a set to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 at third singles, and Mary Washington winning at fifth singles in three sets.

The final point was won by Tartan senior Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) at first singles when she finished off Kait Brogan, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

Carnegie Mellon will next host 15th-ranked Johns Hopkins University on Sunday, April 9 at 1:00 p.m.
