Five Tartans Advance to Round of 16 at ITA Regional; Three Doubles Tandems Head to Quarterfinals

(FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team started the USTA-ITA Southeast Regional Women's Tennis Championships on Saturday. The three-day event is being held on the campus of University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Five Tartans advanced to the round of 16 in singles play while a trio of doubles teams reached the quarterfinals.

In singles play, senior Cori Sidell (Redwood Shores, Calif./Carlmont), juniors Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) and Marina Selenica (Birmingham, Mich./Detroit Country Day School), along with sophomore Vinaya Rao (Vernon Hills, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) and freshman Hannah Rosenfield (Manchester, England/Windemere Preparatory School) all advanced to the round of 16.

Sidell turned in wins over Caitlyn Sorelle of Ursinus and Rachel Cooper of Mary Washington. She defeated Sorelle, 6-0, 6-1 before downing Cooper 4-6, 7-5, 6-0. Sidell's win over Sorelle was her 100th career combined victory of her career.

Vizelman started the day with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Lauren Altschuler of Dickinson and then defeated Chrissy Simon of Johns Hopkins 6-2, 6-2. Selenica won 6-1, 6-0 over Greta Koch of Haverford and Melissa Barall against Melissa Barall of St. Mary's. Rao defeated Sarah Haas of Franklin & Marshall and Margo Gerke of Johns Hopkins. She won both in straight sets, winning 6-2, 6-0 over Haas and 6-1, 6-4 over Gerke. Rosenfield advanced to the round of 16 with wins over Emma Kassan of Swarthmore and Katie Gauch of John Hopkins. The freshman defeated Kassan 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-2 and the topped Gauch 6-1, 6-3.

In doubles play, the tandems of Rao and freshman Melissa Strome (West Bloomfield, Mich.), Sidell and sophomore Courtney Ollis (Suffern, N.Y. / Suffern), and Selenica and Vizelman all won two matches on Saturday.

Rao and Strome won 8-6 over the tandem from Johnshopkins before defeating the duo from Swarthmore 8-1. Sidell and Ollis picked up wins over the doubles teams from Johns Hopkins and Franklin & Marshall winning 8-5 and 8-2, respectively. Selenica and Vizelman started the day with an 8-6 win over the pair from Swarthmore and then won 8-3 over the duo from Washington & Lee.
