Tartans Split with Higher Division Opponents

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team started its spring season against Division II Slippery Rock University and Division I Duquesne University on Saturday, February 3. The Tartans topped Slippery Rock, 8-1, before falling to the Dukes, 7-0, and now are 5-1 for the season.

Senior Cori Sidell (Redwood Shores, Calif./Carlmont) won twice against Slippery Rock, first by pairing with sophomore Vinaya Rao (Vernon Hills, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) at first doubles and then by winning at first singles. Sidell and Rao topped Lacey Cohen and Carla Corrochano, 8-3, to claim the first point of the match.

Senior Katie Lai (Hagatna, Guam/St. Andrew's Episcopal School) and junior Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) put the Tartans ahead 2-0 with an 8-6 win at third doubles.

Vizelman was the first to finish singles play and made the match score 3-1 with a 7-5, 6-1 win at second singles. Next was Sidell's first singles victory by a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 score.

Rao earned match point at third singles with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Viola Lugmayr. The Tartans also won at fourth, fifth, and sixth singles against Slippery Rock.

The Tartans will next be in action on Saturday, February 10 at 2:00 p.m. against Division I Saint Francis University at The Club Sport and Life in Monroeville, Pennsylvania.
