#9 Tartans End NCAA Run in Third Round

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team, ranked ninth nationally, hosted fifth-ranked Wesleyan University in the third round of the 2018 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship and dropped a 5-1 decision.

Wesleyan took the first point of the match at first doubles before the Tartans second pair of sophomore Vinaya Rao (Vernon Hills, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) and freshman Melissa Strome (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) won 8-6 to even the score at 1-1. The Cardinals third doubles tandem then won 9-7 to give Wesleyan a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.

In singles play, Wesleyan took the final three points it needed at the one, two and four spots, respectively, for the team win. As the match ended, Strome won her first set at five singles and was ahead 3-2 in the second set. Freshman Hannah Rosenfield (Manchester, England / Windemere Preparatory School), playing in the six spot, was up a set and trailed 4-3 in the second.

Carnegie Mellon ends its season with an overall record of 20-5 while the Cardinals are now 14-3.
