Women's Tennis Hosts Annual Invitational

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team began the 2018-19 campaign with its annual home invitational against Division I Duquesne University on Friday. The normal two-day event was shortened due to the rain in the Pittsburgh area over the weekend.

In singles play, junior Vinaya Rao (Vernon Hills, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) and sophomore Melissa Strome (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) picked up wins. Rao defeated Meredith Lee 6-3, 6-2 while Strome won 7-5, 6-2 over Maddy Adams.

The Tartans freshmen shined in doubles play with two tandems collecting wins on Friday. The pair of Beata Liberchuk (Edgewater, N.J. / Dwight-Englewood) and Lindy Cornwall (Poway, Calif. / Poway) won 6-4 over Lee and Maranda Sears. The other first-year duo of Victoria Chang (Dublin, Ohio / Dublin Jerome) and Danna Taylor (Orlando, Fla. / Circle Christian School) also posted a 6-4 win over Miranda Bishard and Tyra Abdalla.

The Tartans will compete the weekend of September 14-16 at the Hall of Fame Invitational in Newport News, Rhode Island and at the Kenyon Invitational in Gambier, Ohio.
