#11 Tartans Open Indoor Season with 7-0 Victory Against Slippery Rock

(WEXFORD, Pa.) - The 11th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team opened the second half of the season against Division II Slippery Rock University on Friday, February 1 at the Oxford Athletic Club in Wexford, Pennsylvania, winning 7-0. The Tartans advance to 3-1 for the year while Slippery Rock drops its first contest and is also 3-1.

The Tartans swept through doubles play to earn the point according to Division II scoring rules before earning victories at all six singles positions. Sophomore Melissa Strome (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) and freshman Danna Taylor (Orlando, Fla. / Circle Christian School) earned the first win at first doubles, 8-4.

Taylor was a double winner on the day, picking up a victory at first singles, 6-2, 6-1, against junior Lacey Cohen. Fellow freshman Victoria Chang (Dublin, Ohio / Dublin Jerome) and Beata Liberchuk (Edgewater, N.J. / Dwight-Englewood) finished their respective sixth and fifth singles matches ahead of Taylor by 6-3, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-0 scores.

The Tartans will next host Indiana University of Pennsylvania in an exhibition match on Saturday, February 9.
