#10 Tartans Defeat #24 Christopher Newport, 8-1, at Home

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team hosted 24th-ranked Christopher Newport University on Sunday, April 7, defeating the Captains 9-1. The Tartans improved to 13-6 for the season while Christopher Newport dropped to 9-6.

The first point came from the third doubles team of freshman Janabelle Wu (San Jose, Calif. / Lynbrook) and sophomore Alex Iordache (Princeton, N.J. / South Brunswick) when they won 8-2. The second doubles team of junior Courtney Ollis (Suffern, N.Y. / Suffern) and junior Vinaya Rao (Vernon Hills, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) won 8-5 before the first doubles team of sophomore Melissa Strome (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) and freshman Danna Taylor (Orlando, Fla. / Circle Christian School) won by the same score.

Freshman Beata Liberchuk (Edgewater, N.J. / Dwight-Englewood) was the first to finish singles play, winning 6-0, 6-0 at sixth singles. Taylor then sealed the match victory with a 6-2, 6-0 win at first singles.

The Tartans will next host John Carroll University on Sunday, April 14 at 10:00 a.m.
