Tartans Split Against Division I Opponents

(NIAGARA, N.Y.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team traveled to Western New York for two matches against Division I opponents. The Tartans first faced the University of Buffalo and fell 4-3 before topping Niagara, 7-0.

Buffalo won all three doubles matches to earn a 1-0 advantage heading into singles play. Buffalo earned wins at second and third singles before freshman Madeline Fidel (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton North) won 2-6, 6-3, 10-3 to earn the Tartans' first point.

The Bulls then won at fourth singles to clinch the match victory before sophomore Lindy Cornwall (Poway, Calif. / Poway) won 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) at fifth singles and sophomore Danna Taylor (Orlando, Fla. / Circle Christian School) won 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).

Against Niagara, the Tartans swept doubles by scores of 7-6 (7-5) at the first position, 6-4 at second, and 6-1 at third doubles.

Sophomore Vicki Chang (Dublin, Ohio / Dublin Jerome) finished singles first with a 6-0, 6-0 win at sixth singles before Taylor won 6-2, 6-2 at first singles. Cornwall then clinched the match victory with a 6-1, 6-2, win at fourth singles.

The Tartans will next face Christopher Newport University at home on Saturday, October 5 before Taylor and senior Courtney Ollis (Suffern, N.Y. / Suffern) travel to Rome, Georgia, for the ITA National Singles and Doubles Tournament on October 17-20.
