#5 Tartans Fall in Marathon Match with #12 Kenyon, 5-4

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The fifth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team hosted 12th-ranked Kenyon College for its final match of the regular season on Sunday, May 2. Playing on three courts, the Ladies of Kenyon pulled off a 5-4 win after more than seven hours of action to remain undefeated at 7-0 while the Tartans finish at 11-2.

The Tartans held a 2-1 lead after doubles when the first pair of junior Lindy Cornwall (Poway, Calif. / Poway) and sophomore Bin Zheng (Miami, Fla. / Doral Academy) topped nationally ranked Erika Oku and Daria Beshentseva 8-7 (9-7). The Tartans number three pair of freshman Farida Abdelmoneum (Portland, Ore. / K12 International Academy) and sophomore Megan Qiang (Cleveland, Ohio / Hathaway Brown School) started the scoring with an 8-5 win.

Kenyon took a 3-2 lead with wins at third and first singles before Zheng finished a 2-hour two-set match at second singles against 48th-ranked Beshentseva with a 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 victory to tie the match.

After Kenyon won at fourth singles, Qiang won 7-6 (9-7), 6-1 at fifth singles against regionally ranked Ilana Blackwood to remain undefeated for the season with nine wins. That left senior Alex Iordache (Princeton, N.J. / South Brunswick) to finish singles play. Iordache went three sets with Anna Winslow before Winslow was able to fight her off for a tiebreaker win of 7-4 in the third set to win 6-2, 2-6, 7-6.
