(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team will compete for the 2021 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship after compiling a regular season record of 12-2. The Tartans will travel to Rocky Mount, North Carolina, for the first, second and third rounds and will open play in the second round against host North Carolina Wesleyan College on Friday, May 14.

This tournament selection is the 15th for the women's tennis program, all of which have come under the leadership of head coach Andrew Girard.

The Tartans received an at-large bid to the tournament and its match-up with North Carolina Wesleyan will be a program first. N.C. Wesleyan enters the match with a 10-6 record and winners of the USA South Conference. Wilkes College (13-0) and Penn State Harrisburg (8-0) open the tournament on Thursday with the winner facing the University Mary Washington (12-2) on Friday before the Tartans' match. Friday's winners will play Saturday, May 15 for a chance to advance to the quarterfinals. Should the Tartans win out, it would mark the seventh quarterfinals appearance for the program, with the last time coming in 2019.

North Carolina Wesleyan is on a seven-match winning streak and earned its third consecutive USA South title. They are led by a pair of freshmen at first doubles and first and third singles, including the USA South Rookie of the Year. The Bishops also have a pair of seniors at second doubles who are on a seven-match winning streak.

The Tartans have a solid mix of all classes in their lineup with junior Lindy Cornwall (Poway, Calif. / Poway) and sophomore Bin Zheng (Miami, Fla. / Doral Academy) playing the top two singles positions and teaming up at first doubles. At doubles, the pair have a 10-3 record while Cornwall holds an 11-3 record in singles play.

All match times are still to be determined and will be announced as soon as information is available.
