Tartan Women Advance to NCAA Women’s Tennis Third Round

(ROCKY MOUNT, N.C.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team topped host North Carolina Wesleyan College, 5-1, in the second round of the 2021 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship on Saturday, May 15. The Tartans are now 13-2 for the season while the Bishops finish at 10-7.

The Tartans held a 2-1 advantage after doubles play with the third pair of freshman Farida Abdelmoneum (Portland, Ore. / K12 International Academy) and sophomore Megan Qiang (Cleveland, Ohio / Hathaway Brown School) winning 8-0 and the number one pair of junior Lindy Cornwall (Poway, Calif. / Poway) and sophomore Bin Zheng (Miami, Fla. / Doral Academy) winning 8-7 (7-4). The win for Abdelmoneum and Qiang was the ninth of the season for the pair while Cornwall and Zheng have a record of 10-3.

In singles play, the Tartans led a set in all six matches before winning at the sixth, fifth, and fourth positions to take the match victory.

Freshman Abigail Khieu (Potomac, Md. / Walt Whitman) won 6-0, 6-0 in the sixth position for her third win of the season and a 3-1 Tartan lead. Senior Alex Iordache (Princeton, N.J. / South Brunswick) finished her fifth singles match with a 6-0, 6-3 win while Qiang won 6-1, 6-3 at fourth singles. 

The Tartans advance to the third round for the 12th time in school history and will face a familiar opponent in the University of Mary Washington on Sunday, May 16 at 12:00 p.m. at North Carolina Wesleyan University.
