Tartans Host Invitational with Two Going Undefeated During Play

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team had its first home competition of the 2021-22 year with its annual invitational with Division I Duquesne University and Saint Francis University and Division II Slippery Rock University participating in the action. Competition begin Friday evening between Duquesne and the Tartans with Saint Francis and Slippery Rock joining for singles and doubles action on Saturday.

Freshman Crystal Zhou (Austin, Texas / LASA) went 6-0 for the weekend with three singles wins and three doubles wins. Zhou paired with junior Megan Qiang (Cleveland, Ohio / Hathaway Brown School) for two of those wins. She opened the weekend with a 6-1, 6-4 win against Natasha Novak of Duquesne before taking a three-set win on Saturday against Anouk Ma-Ajong of Saint Francis and an 8-1 win against Daniela Latoni of Duquesne to complete her singles play. Zhou is now 6-0 for the season in singles and 5-1 in doubles play.

Junior Bin Zheng (Miami, Fla. / Doral Academy) was also undefeated for the weekend with a come-from-behind three-set win Friday night against Blanca Benet Garcia and a 6-4, 6-1 singles win on Saturday against G. del Val del Toro of Slippery Rock. Zheng paired with senior Lindy Cornwall (Poway, Calif. / Poway) to win three doubles matches. The pair finished the 2021 season ranked fourth in the nation and won their three matches this weekend by 8-5, 8-6 and 8-3 scores.

Freshman Sarah Yang (Alpharetta, Ga. / Northview) went 2-1 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles play while freshman Ava Givone (Delray Beach, Fla. / Oxbridge Academy) was 2-0 in doubles and 1-1 in singles.

The Tartans will return to the courts on Saturday, September 25 at the ITA Southeast Regional Tournament. The three-day tournament will be hosted by the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
