Tartans Advance Two Pairs to Doubles Final at ITA Southeast Regional

(FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) – For the fourth straight ITA Southeast Regional, the Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team will have doubles champion crowned. On Sunday afternoon, the Tartans had two pairs of teammates advanced to the championship final to be played Monday.

Senior Lindy Cornwall (Poway, Calif. / Poway) and junior Bin Zheng (Miami, Fla. / Doral Academy) won a pair of 8-2 matches on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals Sunday. In the quarterfinals, the tandem won 8-1 to advance the semifinals against Ruth de Souza and Allison Wandling of Sweet Briar College. Cornwall and Zheng came away with an 8-6 win to advance to their second straight regional title match.

A pair of first-year Tartans, Ava Givone (Delray Beach, Fla. / Oxbridge Academy) and Crystal Zhou (Austin, Texas / LASA), also advanced to play on Sunday with a pair of 8-2 victories on Saturday. The duo won a thrilling tiebreaker match in the quarterfinals by the score of 8-7 (5) to head to the semifinals against Jahveesha Combs and Natalia García Molina of Shenandoah University where they won 8-2.

In singles play, Zhou advanced to the semifinals after defeating Gabi Moss of Washington and Lee University, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarterfinals. Joining Zhou in the quarterfinals was classmate Sarah Yang (Alpharetta, Ga. / Northview). Yang faced Ali Bader of Johns Hopkins University and fell by the scores of 6-4, 6-4.

The doubles championship will be played on Monday followed by the singles semifinals and finals.
