Tartans Top Oberlin 9-0 and Collect Wins in Home Invitational

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - Fresh off a weekend of sweeping the singles and doubles championships at the ITA Southeast Regional, the Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team hosted an invitational with Division I Duquesne University and Division II West Liberty University while also taking on Oberlin College in a dual match which they won 9-0.

The Tartans were 11-1 during Friday's invitational action and 10-1 on Saturday. 

Senior Lindy Cornwall (Poway, Calif. / Poway) and junior Bin Zheng (Miami, Fla. / Doral Academy) picked up three doubles victories for the weekend including an 8-5 win in the dual match at first doubles against Oberlin. The victories give Cornwall a 14-0 record in doubles for the season while Zheng runs her doubles record to 11-0.

The freshmen pair of Ava Givone (Delray Beach, Fla. / Oxbridge Academy) and Crystal Zhou (Austin, Texas / LASA) also won three matches with an 8-6 win against Oberlin in the second doubles position.

Zhou played first singles for the Tartans against Oberlin and won, 6-3, 6-1, to run her unbeaten singles mark to 13. Other notable singles wins came from freshman Sarah Yang (Alpharetta, Ga. / Northview) at third singles and Givone at fifth singles, as both swept their matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores.

Junior Megan Qiang (Cleveland, Ohio / Hathaway Brown School) went 6-0 for the weekend with three singles victories while pairing with Yang at third doubles in the Oberlin match, with freshman Simran Bedi (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) for an 8-3 win against West Liberty and with senior Ola Wojciak (Holmdel, N.J. / Holmdel) for an 8-1 win against a different duo from West Liberty.

Yang also had a 6-0 record for the weekend while surrendering just four games in her three singles victories.

The Tartans will finish the fall season with Cornwall, Zheng and Zhou competing at the ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia, from Thursday, October 14 through Sunday, October 17.
