Tartans Advance to Fifth-Place Match at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship

(NICHOLASVILLE, Ky.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team advanced to the fifth-place match at the 2022 ITA Women's National Team Indoor Championship with a 7-2 win over host Centre College on Saturday morning. The Tartans are now 6-2 overall while the Colonels move to 4-4.

Carnegie Mellon grabbed a 2-1 advantage following doubles play after collecting a pair of 8-2 victories. The tandem of senior Janabelle Wu (San Jose, Calif. / Lynbrook) and freshman Crystal Zhou (Austin, Texas / LASA) won at the second spot and sophomore Farida Abdelmoneum (Portland, Ore. / K12 International Academy) and junior Megan Qiang (Cleveland, Ohio / Hathaway Brown School) won at three doubles.

The Tartans then collected five wins in singles to secure the 7-2 victory. Freshman Sarah Yang (Alpharetta, Ga. / Northview) won 6-3, 6-1 at the top singles flight. Senior Lindy Cornwall (Poway, Calif. / Poway) recorded the team point at second singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win.

Fourth singles was won by Qiang by the scores of 6-3, 6-3. Senior Victoria Chang (Dublin, Ohio / Dublin Jerome) and sophomore Abigail Khieu (Potomac, Md. / Walt Whitman) both won by the scores of 6-0, 6-0 at fifth and sixth singles, respectively.

The Tartans will now play MIT in the fifth-place match at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday.
