Tartans Open Spring Trip with 8-1 Win Over Christopher Newport

(ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team opened its spring trip to Florida with an 8-1 win over Christopher Newport University Tuesday afternoon. The Tartans are now 7-3 overall while Christopher Newport is now 1-5.

Carnegie Mellon took a 2-1 advantage following doubles play win wins at the second and third spots. The Tartans second doubles tandem of senior Janabelle Wu (San Jose, Calif. / Lynbrook) and freshman Crystal Zhou (Austin, Texas / LASA) gained the first point with an 8-1 victory. Following a win by Christopher Newport at the top spot, junior Megan Qiang (Cleveland, Ohio / Hathaway Brown School) and freshman Zoe Angell (Midland, Mich. / H.H. Dow) won at three doubles. The duo went to a tiebreaker and won 15-13 to give the Cardinal and Gray their second doubles point.

Senior Victoria Chang (Dublin, Ohio / Dublin Jerome) won 6-1, 6-1 at six singles to take the first points for the Tartans. Qiang then put the Tartans ahead 4-1 after winning her match in the fifth spot 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (4). Senior Lindy Cornwall (Poway, Calif. / Poway) then sealed the win with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at third singles.

The Tartans will play Wesleyan University on Wednesday, March 9, at the USTA Campus at 6:30 p.m.
