#11 Tartans Advance to 17th Semifinal Match at UAA the Championship

(ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.) - The 11th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team opened University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Friday at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida, with a 5-1 win over NYU. The Tartans move to 14-5 overall while the Violets are now 3-4. This marks the 17th consecutive trip for the Tartans to the semifinals of the UAA Championships.

The first point of the match came at third doubles when the tandem of junior Megan Qiang (Cleveland, Ohio / Hathaway Brown School) and freshman Zoe Angell (Midland, Mich. / H.H. Dow) won 8-1. Moments later, senior Lindy Cornwall (Poway, Calif. / Poway) and junior Bin Zheng (Miami, Fla. / Doral Academy) made the score 2-0 with an 8-1 victory at the top spot.

Zheng pushed the score to 3-1 with a 6-0, 6-0 win at four singles. Qiang then won at the sixth spot 6-0, 6-1 followed by Cornwall at third singles by the scores of 6-4, 6-3 to seal the Tartan victory.

The Tartans will now play fourth-ranked Emory University in the semifinals at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 23.
