#11 Tartans End NCAA Run in Third Round

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The 11th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis hosted fifth-ranked Middlebury College in the third round of 2022 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship Saturday afternoon and dropped a hard fought 5-2 match to the Panthers.

The Tartans grabbed the first point of the afternoon when the tandem of senior Lindy Cornwall (Poway, Calif. / Poway) and junior Bin Zheng (Miami, Fla. / Doral Academy) won 8-3 at the top doubles spot. Second doubles was taken by the Panthers while the Tartan duo of junior Megan Qiang (Cleveland, Ohio / Hathaway Brown School) and freshman Zoe Angell (Midland, Mich. / H.H. Dow) forced a tiebreaker at three before dropping an 8-7 (4) set which gave Middlebury a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.

Freshman Sarah Yang (Alpharetta, Ga. / Northview) knotted the score at 2-2 with a 6-1, 6-1 win at the top singles spot. The Panthers then claimed victories at three, six and four singles to seal the 5-2 win.

When play was stopped, freshman Crystal Zhou (Austin, Texas / LASA) forced a third set after dropping set on 6-2 before winning the second set 6-4 at two singles.

Carnegie Mellon ends its season with an overall record of 16-7 while the Panthers are now 17-5.
