#12 Tartans Open Dual Schedule With Victories Over Two Division II Opponents

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team, ranked 12th in Division III, opened the second part of its season with a pair of matches against two Division II institutions, West Virginia Wesleyan College and Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Saturday. The Tartans won 7-0 over West Virginia Wesleyan before beating IUP 5-2. The Tartans are now 2-0 in dual action.

Inside the Results Against West Virgina Wesleyan:

  • The Tartans took the point in doubles play with a pair of 6-0 victories at the two and three spots. The tandem of junior Divya Venkatarama and freshman Joycie Lu played at two while junior Anika Joshi and sophomore Ainika Hou played at three.
  • The Tartans captured their first point of singles when junior Manuela Van Cotthem recorded a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the fifth spot.
  • Freshman Ancele Dolensek then won 6-0, 6-0 at two singles before classmate Victoria Gazda sealed the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win at the third spot.
  • Senior Zoe Angell, freshman Shelly Zinchenko and Joshi also all collected straight set victories.

Inside the Results Against IUP:

  • Carnegie Mellon collected the point in doubles after winning at two and three. Angell and Zinchenko won 7-5 at three while Venkatarama and Dolensek won 7-6 (4) at two.
  • Zinchenko then won 6-4, 6-4 at two singles followed by Gazda at six singles winning by the scores of6-2, 6-2.
  • Dolensek then sealed the win for the Tartans with a 6-4, 7-6 (5) at four singles.
  • The Tartans fifth point came at the top spot when senior Sarah Yang won 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5).
