Tartans Finish First in Six Events to Win 2014 CMU Tri- Meet

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team finished first in six events to win the 2014 CMU Mid-Week meet against Penn State Behrend and Allegheny College.

In the javelin throw, senior Samantha Oleson (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) had a career-best toss of 27.74 meters to take the title in the event.

The Tartans earned three first-place titles in the jumps.  Junior Sasha Spalding (Springhill, Fla./Springstead) took the title in the women's long jump when she leapt 5.07 meters.  Freshman Rebecca Fortner (Navarre, Ohio/Fairless) grabbed the next title for the Tartans as she glided over the bar set at 1.50 meters in the high jump. Fellow freshman, Karen Irvine (Villanova, Pa./Harriton), set a new career-best in the pole vault with a mark of 2.90 meters to take first place.

Senior Jacqueline Guevel (Dallas, Texas/The Hockaday School) grabbed two more titles for the Tartans in the hurdles. In the 100-meter hurdles, Guevel got first place when she crossed the finish line with a time of 15.37. Later in the afternoon she was able to stop the clock at 1:04.28 in the 400-meter hurdles for her second title of the day.

There were also Tartans who set new career-best marks in their respective events. Oleson set a second career-best mark when she heaved the weight throw 41.52 meters for second place. Freshman Sommer Farber (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) got third place and set a new personal record in the long jump when she landed in the sand with a mark of 4.58 meters. In the pole vault, Grace Yee (San Francisco, Calif./Lick-Wilmerding) jumped 2.75 meters for her new personal best.

The women's track and field team will be competing next weekend April 26 and 27 at the 2014 University Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois.
