Tartans Take Second Place at Denison's Bob Shannon Invitational

(GRANVILLE, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team traveled to Denison University for the Bob Shannon Invitational on Saturday, February 7. The Tartans finished in second place with 93 points as Ohio Wesleyan University won with 193 points.

Sophomore Rebecca Fortner (Navarre, Ohio/Fairless) won the high jump, clearing 1.57 meters as sophomore Grace Yee (San Francisco, Calif./Lick-Wilmerding) placed third in the pole vault with a career-best mark of 3.05 meters. Freshman Sarah Miholer (Stow, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) cleared 2.90 meters in the pole vault to take fifth place.

Senior Sasha Spalding (Springhill, Fla./Springstead) recorded a season-best 10.93 meters in the shot put and took eighth place. She also ran the 400-meter dash and finished second in 1:00.06.

Junior Priya Patel (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) finished fourth in the mile run in 5:51.95 while sophomore Emily Joyce (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring) was fifth in 5:52.70.

In the 60-meter hurdles, sophomore Sommer Farber (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) finished in 10.18 seconds to place fourth. Freshman Sarah Cook (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) made the finals of the 60-meter dash and placed fifth overall in 8.37 seconds.

Senior Erin Kiekhaefer (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) had the lone victory of the day for the Tartans coming in the 800-meter run with a season-best time of 2:21.20, as sophomore Ariel Tian (Acton, Mass./Acton Boxborough Regional) placed seventh in 2:29.95.

Two Tartans earned points in the 200-meter dash as Cook placed fourth in 27.41 seconds and freshman Jerilyn James (Friendswood, Texas/Clear Brook) finished eighth in 28.28 seconds.

The 3,000-meter run was the top event for the Tartans on the day when four crossed the finish line in the top eight. Patel led the team in fourth place with a time of 11:26.92, while freshman Rhiannon Farney (Winston Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) was fifth in 11:34.32. Junior Nina Hill (Amherst, Ohio/Amherst Steele) placed sixth in 11:39.17 and Joyce crossed in eighth in a time of 11:52.00.

In the 4x400, Tian, Kiekhaefer, sophomore Shaheen Essabhoy (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) and sophomore Emily Swanson (Atkinson, N.H./Timberlane Regional) teamed up to finish third in a time of 4:26.76.

Next weekend, the Tartans will compete at Tiffin University on Saturday, February 14.
