Three Track & Field Athletes Named CoSIDA Academic All-District

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Carnegie Mellon University had three track and field athletes named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Team for men's and women's cross country and track and field on Thursday, May 25. On the women's side, senior Grace Yee (San Francisco, Calif./Lick-Wilmerding) and junior Sarah Cook (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) were honored, along with senior Owen Norley (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) garnering accolades on the men's side. Yee and Cook receive the award for the first time while this marks Norley's second honor after receiving it following his junior season.  

CoSIDA recognizes outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments by honoring deserving athletes with All-Academic recognition. Carnegie Mellon is part of District 4, which is comprised of all Division III schools in the state of Pennsylvania.  

Yee, the school record holder and three-time University Athletic Association (UAA) champion in the pole vault, carries a 3.76 GPA. The material science and engineering major, is a six-time All-UAA Academic honoree. She was awarded the UAA President's Council Scholar Athlete Award on two occasions and was inducted into the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honors Society in 2016.

Cook, a biological sciences major, carries a GPA of 3.83. For her career, she has been part of six school records, two coming in relays, including one set this season at the UAA Indoor Championships in the 4x400 meter relay. She is a four-time All-UAA Academic honoree and has been a Laboratory Research Assistant at the Hillman Cancer Center at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute since May of 2015. Cook currently is Co-President of the Global Medical Brigades, which is an international non-profit that empowers communities to meet their health and economic goals through university volunteers and local teams.

Norley, a materials science engineering major, has a 3.42 GPA.  He was crowned the individual University Athletic Association (UAA) champion in the mile run during the indoor season each of the past three years and was named Most Outstanding Performer in Running Events following the indoor championships this season. Norley became a two-time All-American after placing fifth in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championships this past March with a school record time. For his career, he is an eight-time UAA champion for the indoor and outdoor track seasons with four coming on relay teams. The senior is also part of the two school record relay teams, 4x800-meter and distance medley relay. Norley has previously interned at Textron Aviation in Wichita, Kansas, was a resident assistant at Carnegie Mellon his sophomore year and is a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

All three now move on to the national ballot for CoSIDA Academic All-America consideration.
